Mrs. Mamie Lewis Obituary

Mrs. Mamie M. Lewis, 94 of Bladenboro, NC peacefully passed on Thursday, September 10, 2020.  Graveside services will be held on Friday, September 18, 2020 at 10:00 am in the Brooklyn Cemetery, Highway 242 South, Bladenboro N.C. Reverend Hardy Ballard, Jr., Pastor Officiating   Viewing: Thursday 1-6 pm in the Funeral Home Chapel.

McIntosh was a graduate of Upchurch High School in Raeford, North Carolina and graduated second from a class of 125 at age 16.  After graduation she attended DeShazor Beauty College in Durham, North Carolina and graduated second of a class of over 100 cosmetologists.

     Although her religious background was Baptist, in 1944, she joined St. Luke AME Zion Church in Bladenboro, North Carolina under the tutelage of the late Reverend George Thompson.  Immediately, she began serving in various capacities and ministries.  For approximately 50 years, Mamie Lewis served on the Usher board: occupied the position of Church clerk between 20 and 25 years: was a member of the Kitchen committee for at least 10 years: and during a position of that time, served in a leadership position.  She was a member of the Senior choir for an estimated 10 years.  In addition, she held the position of Preacher's steward to Reverend James W. Britt, Bishop Ivan Morton and Reverend Don C. Copeland.

     While holding the position of District officer and a delegate of the Annual Conferences for more than a decade, she simultaneously held the title of president of the "Bud of Promise" for more than three decades.  She served in the capacity of missionary more than 50 years and as a deaconess for more than 30.

     Deaconess Mamie Lee Lewis was affiliated with several facilities and organizations which included the Beulah Chapter OES 597 of the Eastern Star in Clarkton, North Carolina for more than 50 years: and held the positions of treasurer for several years and as secretary for 20.

     Mama Mamie was a widow: mother of two: Mamie L. (James) Hargrove, Oxford, NC and Jeanette D. (Roosevelt) White, Washington, DC; grandmother of two: April I. (James) Johnson and Venecia L. White, Washington, DC; great-grandmother of three: Tye' White, Gerel Hayes, and Thomas White, Washington, DC; great-great-grandmother of three: Kalef Hayes, Tristan White and Mahari "LeRu" White, Washington, DC, Sister-in-law; Betty McIntosh, Hartford, CT.  She was an aunt to a multiplicity of nieces and nephews; and, godmother to a host of others.
