Bernice Mitchell-Munn was born June 27, 1927 in St. Pauls, NC to the late Sarah G. Williams and Jessie Harrell.  She attended and joined Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church at an early age.  She departed life on July 7, 2019 at Peak Resources of Carthage, NC.  Preceding her in death were; her mother, Sarah G. Williams; her father, Jessie Harrell; her husbands, John Henry Mitchell and James R. Munn; her sons, Gregory D. Mitchell and Laurance D. Glover and sister Elizabeth White.

After receiving her education in the Robeson County School System, she moved to Jamaica Queens, New York and received license as a cosmetologist.  There, she married the late John Henry Mitchell and to that union were born five children.

In addition to her own children, Bernice also raised several other family members.  She installed in them the importance and value of hard work.  That was the one rule she lived by.  She enjoyed talking about "the old days" of growing up in the south and shared memories of her childhood.

She found employment at the hospital now known as Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton, NC, as a cafeteria worker and Robeson County Schools as a custodian and a cafeteria worker.  Later she was employed at Converse Factory in Lumberton, NC, were she retired after 20 years.

Bernice was known for her strong spirit, her knowledge and her willingness to always help.  She never met a stranger and everyone was treated as family..  She was a pillar of the community, loved by many who called her either mom, auntie, grandma or cousin.  She loved to work but enjoyed family time just as much.  Cooking, fishing, hunting and gardening were her passions.

She leaves to cherish her memories: her children, John P. Mitchell and Gwendolyn L. Mitchell both of St. Pauls, NC and Alan J. Mitchell (Marlo) of Tacoma, Washington; a sister, Letha Fleming of Brooklyn, New York; two step-brothers, Amos Harrell and Leonard Harrell of Parkton, NC; three daughter-in-laws, Percresa R. Mitchell of Tar Heel, NC and Thomasina Glover of Tacoma, Washington and Alice Glover of New Bern, NC; 20 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren; beloved extended family members, Vonnie Colson (Teresa) and Panessa Rozier of St. Pauls, NC; two God-sons, DeWayne Rozier of St. Pauls, NC and Juan Gaddy of Charlotte, NC; a God daughter, Teresa McNeil of St. Pauls, NC; a very special friend Lacy Currie of St. Pauls, NC; a family friend and Caretaker Rose Hunt of St. Pauls, NC and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
